Ageism Information

In today’s world stereotypes run rampant, and biases based on age – like ageism – are becoming a more measurable problem. Ageism is the discrimination against an individual strictly on the basis of their age. Ageism is most often thought of as prejudice against older individuals, however there are forms of ageism that affect younger generations as well.

Ageism can appear in multiple areas of everyday life and take many forms. Ageism discriminatory practices can appear in the workplace, the healthcare system, forms of marketing, and even online shopping. Learn more.

Ageism in the workplace occurs when companies, managers or co-workers present negative attitudes towards an individual because of their age. Whether this means the employee is stereotyped as someone who can’t complete their job anymore because they are aging, or perhaps they are being phased out of the company because a younger generation is thought to have a better understanding of new technology, like AI, or the current workplace ecosystem. Ageism stereotyping start at a young age. We watch how the media portrays both older and younger generations – from how they dress to how they act on the screen. It’s no wonder that we’re programmed (basically from birth) to judge individuals based on their age.

It’s hard to break away from allowing your brain to go towards stereotypes in each and every situations you’re involved in. That’s why education about stereotypes, including ageism, is so important. Yes, you may still immediately set a stereotype to someone when you first see them or talk to them, but if you’re aware of that, you can more easily break that habit. Learn more.

It can be daunting enough to have to find a new job no matter where you are in your career, but add ageism into the mix and finding a job can feel torturous. The good news is that you’re not alone – ageism in job interviews can happen to anyone of any age.

Maybe your resume reads perfectly, but when you enter the office the hiring manager sees you as “too young” to oversee a team, or “too old” to be a team player. No matter which way the ageism you experience swings, it’s upsetting. Learn more.

Ageism in society can take many forms. From stereotypes about retirement communities to judging glances older individuals get while they’re out in the community going about their day-to-day business. It’s hard to pinpoint all of the exact instances where older adults face ageism within society, and because of that the cure for the ageism in communities will need to be solved through an overall attitude change from the public towards older adults. About Us

R&S Holdings' commitment to equity

R&S Holdings is an American organization that primarily operates in the states of Texas and Louisiana.

Identifying the issue

Upon opening our first retail location, we became aware of a concerning issue during the hiring process – older citizens were not being given an equal opportunity to secure employment. These individuals were being overlooked due to stereotypes and the assumption that they would not be capable of performing the required tasks.

Taking action

Recognizing this injustice, we took a proactive approach and decided to hire senior citizens, providing them with the necessary training to excel in a retail environment. This training included instruction on computer-based systems that are essential for running the business smoothly.

Understanding the problem

Through this experience, our organization came to realize that age discrimination is a pervasive problem in America, and it is crucial to address this issue promptly. The decision to hire and train senior citizens at our initial location was driven by the observation that age discrimination is alarmingly widespread in the country. Many older individuals are unjustly denied employment opportunities solely based on their age.

Extending efforts

We recognized the importance of challenging this discriminatory practice and took a stand by actively recruiting and training seniors to work in their retail establishment. By doing so, they aimed to break down the stereotypes and biases that hindered older citizens from being considered for jobs they were fully capable of performing. Our commitment to addressing age discrimination extended beyond our own hiring practices. We realized that this issue needed to be tackled on a broader scale throughout America. Our organization understood that the exclusion of older individuals from the workforce solely based on their age was not only unfair but also detrimental to society as a whole.

Advancing awareness

By actively hiring and training senior citizens, we aimed to set an example and encourage other businesses to recognize the value and potential of older workers. The efforts we made shed light on the urgent need to address age discrimination and promote equal opportunities for all individuals, regardless of their age.

Advancing awareness

By actively hiring and training seniors, our organization aimed to challenge the stereotypes and biases associated with older workers. The realization that age discrimination is a widespread problem in America underscored the importance of addressing this issue to promote inclusivity and diversity in the workplace. Through our efforts, we aim to create a more equitable hiring process that values individuals based on their skills and qualifications rather than their age.

Our Goal

A central hub against ageism

Our organization has embraced the task of establishing a central hub that serves as a valuable resource for individuals passionate about advocating against ageism. This hub not only offers a plethora of information to satiate the curiosity of those seeking more knowledge on ageism, but it also provides a platform to connect with like-minded individuals, discover influential organizations, and access a wide range of resources, articles, and studies related to combating age discrimination. Trumark’s initiative aims to empower individuals and foster a sense of community while combating ageism on a larger scale.
